Beirut, Lebanon < Previous country | Next country >

Photo | Map | Reportage

I know very well that Lebanon has been torn apart by wars and civil wars. But that was not the picture I wanted to show. I wanted to show how the regular people, regardless of religion or political beliefs, spend their Sunday at a place where they like to hang out. This is the Corniche, the boulevard that surrounds half of Beirut. The picture says it all.

But of course the constant cycle of violence that is inextricably linked to Beirut can't be denied and is also visible in the photo if you look closely. I decided to have a look in the Shi'ite district of Beirut that had been bombed for 3 months by Israel only 6 months before my visit. I almost walked past it, that's how accurate they performed their strikes. Eventually I found before me a lunar landscape. Less than 20 minutes away from the Corniche. After taking some photos I instantly got picked up by Hezbollah and after an intimidating interrogation I was expelled from the district.
