Belize
Belmopan
Another good example of an unexpected capital. Belize City used to be the capital of Belize but for some reason the government decided to relocate it to this dusty town in the middle of this small Caribbean state. It really is only a couple of streets where nothing special is going on. I guess the bus station is the place with the most activity. But that too is rather dull.
Belize somehow feels different from the rest of Central America. For starters it is the only country with english as its main language. In that way Belize feels closer to the Caribbean than to their spanish speaking neighbors. However, this small country has quite a relaxed vibe to it and it is home to beautiful maya temples and some of the worlds best diving spots including the famous Blue Hole. To my big regret it was impossible for me to get there during my stay.
A good excuse to return some day and have a better look at this small Caribbean state.
