Brazil
Brasilia
Brazil has definitely become one of my favorite countries in the world! And I haven’t even seen that much of it yet. A good reason to return to the vibrant city of Rio de Janeiro. Which, strangely enough, is not Brazil’s capital. The capital is Brasilia. So that’s where I went.
Brasilia has been Brazil’s capital since 1960 following Rio, which was the capital until then. The development of the hinterland was an important reason for President Kubitschek to ‘create’ Brasilia in just a few years. In that way it reminds me very much of Astana, Kazakhstan’s new capital.
Built in the shape of a giant airplane, the city, with its central boulevard and adjacent government buildings, feels rather cheerless to me. It’s very stretched out so it feels empty. Not one of the nicest places I’ve seen. But that’s my humble opinion.
This made it rather hard for me to find a suitable place for photos. Not much was going on except at the bus station. Lucky for me ‘Living Statue’, who became somewhat of a friend over the days, got some smiles out of the street. I couldn’t really speak with him, for he spoke no English and I no Portuguese, but he did make it a lot more pleasant with his act in the streets of Brasilia.
