It feels like a very relaxed and stable country. And Montevideo feels as a very relaxed capital too. I guess it is. It still breathes the air of the old colonial days when the Spanish still ruled this fairly flat country. Although the population is still mostly made up of immigrated Europeans, it feels as if the Uruguayans are their own people, with their own style.
Although everything feels so relaxed it doesn't mean that you can loose your attention or think everything is just fine. When I started taking photos here at my chosen spot a couple of punk anarchists walked into my composition and immediately started hassling me. 'Why was I taking photos of them? Who was I?! Get the hell away with that camera!'. I don't exactly know what they we're saying. I don't speak Spanish. It must have been something like that. I just kept replying that it was my job. In English.
It didn't really work out. In the end, after a tough staring and pushing contest they took off. Not really a good start.
But the beauty of this job is that exactly the opposite can happen just a while later. I decided to have a look at Indepencia Square where a couple of mothers we're chilling out on a bench with their children playing around. I started taking photo's with which they were fine. When suddenly in the back a blue and red figure appeared. I had to look again to convince myself that it actually was Spiderman! Here? In Montevideo? The kids thought it was funny in the beginning. But when he walked up to them they really became scared. I couldn't believe it. And on top of that a weird guy that was hanging around walked up to Spiderman and stood next to him. At exactly the same time they waved in exactly the same way at the kids. I just heard the clicking of my camera. This is the beauty of photography.
