Oman and it's capital Muscat are the hidden jewels of Arabia. Caught between the westernized supercities of Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Qatar and Bahrein, Muscat has somehow managed to retain it's unique style. There's is only one man to thank for this and that's Oman's Sultan. He decided that no building in the capital shall be higher than the Great Mosque of Muscat. That's about 20 meters high so no high-risers here. Which is a relief compared with for instance the mega development of Abu Dhabi.
Muscat has it's own very typical atmosphere. I loved it. The small and low white houses. The quiet streets. The beautiful bay with the massive yacht of the Sultan in it. But even the yacht blends in because of it's color. Not white but a light beige which fits in with the surrounding mountains and buildings of the city.
I was lucky to have some more time in this beautiful place. Leaving the capital for a trip into the mountains close to Muscat. Checking out the amazing fortresses and century old mountain towns where goats roam freely and eagles soar through the skies at sunset. The endless mountain range in pink sunlight. Camping out on the summit waiting for another day to turn into a bright night with a drink and lovely company. Oman has much more to offer than it's charming capital. I'll be back.
