Although this photo of Phnom Penh looks peaceful, the history of Cambodia has been horrible. With an inhuman regime The Khmer Rouge has thrown the country back into the Middle Ages.

Fortunately, this is now history. However, the political situation in Cambodia is very vulnerable and political assassinations regularly take place in broad daylight.

This photo shows what harm a regime like the Khmer Rouge can do, even in the long run. Cambodia lies behind decennia compared to the development of it's neighbour Thailand. This is clearly visible when you lay the two photos side by side. As long as Cambodia remains as corrupt and unstable as it is today it will take a long time before it catches up with the 21st century.
