The special thing about Japan is that there is such a rivalry between the traditions of the country and the enormous urge of the youth, or better yet of most Japanese, to easing them. Young people don't stop emphasizing that in addition to their sense of duty they also are individuals. For the "Salary men" this is a lot harder.
In the streets of Tokyo you see young people making a clear statement, but in subways in the morning I also see a lot of run-down wage slaves staring ahead of them deathlike. Some are clearly drunk. They've had a "business dinner" the night before where the real deals are being closed, but they nevertheless feel obliged to show their pie-eyed faces at the gates of their concerns.
Tonight it's Saturday night and I'm going to Tokyo's hottest nightclub with a friend who speaks Japanese. On the way over there various ladies offer us their services.
In "The Womb" I get a small glimpse of what happens to the Japanese when they loosen the reigns. Both youth and certainly salary men go wild at the sounds of international DJs. It is said that the Japanese lack a certain gene, which makes them break down alcohol less easily than Westerners. But that won't stop them at all from drinking however. There's no aggression anywhere, just fun. In front of the DJ it's especially the salary men who go wild for a few free hours.
