Curacao
Willemstad
Curacao, just like Aruba, is in this weird construction of being a country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. So officially it is a country. But a very young one to say the least. When I’m in Willemstad on the 10th of October, the first anniversary of Curacao is being celebrated. A very interesting time to be here. Yes, it’s a celebration, but not everybody is pleased with how things have gone the past year on the island.
Just before Curacao’s first birthday a crushing report was presented to the Dutch government about the integrity of some Curacao ministers, including the Prime Minister. Bad news. Friction between the Netherlands and Curacao is rising quickly when I’m there. It’s all over the newspapers and radio.
Apart from the political problems there’s also a constant issue with ISLA, the giant oil refinery in the middle of the island. Just recently they were accused of not abiding by the rules that prevent pollution. These giant ships come and leave constantly. A tough choice between income and employment on the one hand and the environment of the island on the other.
So yes, this small island has its share of serious problems. Even the tensions between the black and white community are rising. Hopefully Curacao can take the pressure off a little bit in its second year of existence.
