Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Kingstown

Kingstown. Not to be confused with Kingston, Jamaica’s capital. Set by the seashore, with its colorful market, I liked Kingstown right away. The market is really big compared to the smaller ones in the other Caribbean islands I’ve recently visited. The strange Caribbean accent is all around when English is spoken. It really sounds like the tongue of Captain Jack Sparrow. Quite hard to follow. But it’s mostly Creole. I started to appreciate the sound of it after a few months in this lovely region of the world but I don’t understand anything of it.

Although it’s not really easy to talk to the island dwellers in the small bar where I am, I started talking right away. Of course the regulars of this bar wanted to know why I was hanging around with my camera for quite a while and why I was taking pictures of them. I explained about Streets of the World and they liked that I’d chosen their hang out for the St. Vincent shot. Mused about this unusual story I was invited for a drink after the sun had set. This of course ended up with me buying drinks for all the regulars. However it was a very nice sunset. They told me a lot about their lives and what was going on the island.

I made the mistake to take a large sip of the local rum. This action really surprised the professional alcoholic that offered it to me. It turned out to be 80% alcohol, which seriously woke me up! ‘You suppose to mix that!’, he said laughing his few teeth bare. It was a happy walk home.

Streets of the World: A five
year project traveling to ALL
countries in the world
to photograph street life
in the centre of all capitals.

"For the first time in history it is
possible to visit all countries in
the world in a free, transparent
and fast way.

It's possible; therefore I want to
see and do it. I want to find out
what the world looks like in
our time. How far have we come,
how much are we alike and
how different are we. I want to
meet the people of my time.
To capture a small
part, but a part
indeed of their
lives."
