Saint Kitts and Nevis, Basseterre

I stayed in a private house a few streets up from the harbor. You can still see the English influence in the way the small, older houses are built, amidst the newer ones. The old church in the center tells us about the same colonial history. For the French and also for the English, Saint Kitts was the first island where they built a permanent settlement.

At the rear deck of the ferry

It was quite difficult to find a place that was somehow an example of ‘street life’ in the peaceful town of Basseterre. In the end I tried at the docks where the ferries for Nevis leave. â�¨â�¨The local harbor workers didn’t really appreciate me taking photos so I decided to take the ferry myself. The rear deck of the ferry turned out to be the best place in town, giving me a good view of the volcanic landscape of the island with it’s heavy tropical sky and people returning to the second island of this mellow country.
