WHY?

There is no official capital in Nauru, originally one of the richest countries in the world thanks to its huge reserves of phosphate, used as synthetic fertiliser. The island looks as if it is war-torn, with 80% of its surface having been strip-mined. An environmental disaster! This is the only road, all around the island, which took me one and a half hours by car.

WHAT?

Obesity is the name of the plague hitting the population. All Nauruans have been dependent on imported, cheap and processed food ever since phosphate stopped being the goldmine it used to be. Doctors have noticed a growing number of diabetes victims in a country that offers very few jobs these days.
