Who, I wondered, is building this country, which is growing so impressively fast? Worker ants, who have to be happy with a bowl of soup and lots of smog or working-class heroes who are respected in this communist paradise? It’s an incredible achievement, even if the price is seemingly high.

In the background is the controversial CCTV building designed by Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas. It’s also called ‘Big Underpants’ by less enthusiastic citizens. I wonder if these people believe the propaganda broadcast by Chinese TV.
