WHY?

The first Caribbean island to reach independence (1804) and ever since it has behaved in a very self-conscious manner. Sadly enough, the reigns of Papa Doc and Baby Doc ruined the country. The disastrous earthquake in 2010 left its marks. Everything is focused on surviving, and partly thanks to a pinch of humour, people do manage to survive.

WHAT?

Lots of Haitians still linger in emergency tents. The family in the foreground has been living here for two years already, frying chicken on the pavement to make some money. Street life is hard in Port-au- Prince. Corruption and chaos do not contribute to a rapid reconstruction, yet slowly but surely, progress is being made.
