WHY?

I didn’t opt for the capital Palikir because that turned out to be a village of sorts, but for Kolonia, the de facto capital. The huge satellite equipment is needed to communicate with the outside world. Papua New Guinea, the nearest country, is a four-hour flight away.

WHAT?

Here is where I couch surfed for the first time in my life. The lord of the manor played in a band at the Rusty Anchor Bar. One evening I joined the band and played the blues harmonica to thank him for his hospitality. You’ll find the friendliest people all over the world, even in these faraway Pacific islands.
