WHY?
San Marino is surrounded by the Italians, which is why the population speaks Italian and eats Italian. Their own culture is too weak to be the dominant one. But it’s a mesmerising town with sublime views.
WHAT?
Everything you see in the background is Italy. Italian schoolchildren visit a historic fort. Fortifications are everywhere, as if an invasion is due any moment. But that, of course, is not the case. San Marino found it quite easy to hold on to its independence.
