Normal citizens in Malé aren’t aware of the tourism industry on the outer islands. Islands which are being sold by the authorities to friends and wealthy foreigners. In a recent documentary, Al Jazeera called these deals ‘stealing paradise’.
The front is paradise; behind it poverty. Tourism is served by underpaid staff to enrich an elite. On the main island alcohol is prohibited, following the strict sharia law. Some of the many islands are predicted to sink below sea level quite soon. In the meantime, huge trawlers catch all the tuna they can get. These guys go out to look for the leftovers.
